Chapter 29

The Parable of The New WINE

Matthew 9:17

Jesus told this parable immediately following the new cloth parable in Chapter 28. Therefore, to put this message in context, make sure you read the previous chapter. There, he warned his audience about the folly of putting a new patch on an old garment. Scripture says: “No one puts a piece of un-shrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment and the tear is made worse” (v. 16).

Essentially, the new cloth represents the fact that you cannot mix the new covenant of grace and salvation with the old covenant law. If you are a Christian, you should live in freedom and liberty; you should live to follow the desires and directions of the Holy Spirit, which are to be done in love and not by a set of rules.

The parable of the new wine is found in verse 17. “Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined but they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

A Christian might take many years to understand the difference between the law and grace. If I had received revelation of this truth years ago, my life would have been very different. To understand this parable, you must be open to its context and the meanings behind it.

Wine is mentioned in the Bible a number of times and specifically in the life of Jesus. In fact, the first miracle that Jesus performed was to turn the dirty water that many wedding guests had washed themselves with into fresh wine. He not only turned this polluted water into fresh wine, but the Scripture says that it was the “best” wine. You can read the full account of this miracle in John 2:1-11.

On this occasion, Jesus was a guest at a Jewish wedding. A wedding feast could continue for up to a week in those days, so people expected to drink plenty of wine. The wine at this wedding eventually ran out, and at his mother’s request, Jesus performed this miracle, albeit somewhat reluctantly, because he felt that his time hadn’t come to publicly minister. The embarrassment of the host and his mother’s pleas caused him to rectify the problem in this surprising manner.

At this point, most of the guests at the wedding feast would have been fairly drunk. When the host of the feast tasted that “special” new wine, he said it was the best wine. He felt that the servants should have presented it to the bridal party and to the guests much earlier before they had become intoxicated. By now, they might not appreciate how delicious this wine truly was. That was the normal procedure at wedding feasts. I don’t mean that everyone got drunk at these feasts. Only some of them might have been intoxicated.

First, as I have already stated, the people had already been drinking for several days when Jesus brought the new wine made from dirty washing water.
